This update directly concerns manufacturers of baby bedding. A fitted sheet bearing the label GOTS “organic” contains at least 95% certified organic fibers. The label “made of organic fibers” corresponds to a lower threshold, starting from 70%. The difference between these two levels is rarely specified by retailers.
To verify that a product is authentically certified, it is not enough to spot the logo on the packaging. Each certified manufacturer has a verifiable license number in the public GOTS database. The label must also mention the name of the certifying body (Ecocert, Control Union, or others). Entering this number in the online database allows you to confirm that the certificate is valid and that it indeed covers the “bedding” category.
Finding the recommended organic cotton fitted sheet for a crib or standard bed therefore requires going beyond marketing claims and consulting this database before purchase.

Three terms consistently appear on product sheets for children’s bedding. Their level of protection is not at all equivalent.

Several French manufacturers focus on baby bedding made from organic cotton. The label and the country of manufacture are not enough to differentiate these manufacturers. Three technical criteria deserve systematic verification.
Weight and weaving of organic cotton
An overly thin fitted sheet deforms after a few washes and loses its grip on the mattress. A sufficiently dense weight ensures that the fabric remains well stretched at the corners, reducing the risk of the sheet coming loose during the baby’s sleep. Jersey weaving offers more elasticity, while percale provides a smoother and cooler touch.

Cradle and baby bed mattresses do not have the same thickness. A fitted sheet with an inappropriate bonnet height slips during the night. Checking this measurement before purchase avoids a safety issue: loose fabric in an infant’s bed creates a suffocation risk.

Even on organic cotton, dyeing can introduce undesirable substances if it is not regulated by the GOTS standard. The most rigorous brands use certified dyes without heavy metals and forgo anti-wrinkle treatments based on formaldehyde. This information rarely appears on consumer product sheets but is accessible through the manufacturer’s GOTS certificate.
Care for organic cotton fitted sheets: preserving certification after purchase
A new fitted sheet, even certified, benefits from being washed before first use. This washing eliminates any residues from storage or transport.
Untreated organic cotton shrinks more than conventional cotton during the first cycles. Washing at a maximum of 40 °C preserves the fibers and limits this phenomenon. Conventional fabric softeners deposit a layer of silicone on the fabric, which reduces its breathability and can irritate the baby’s skin. Using white vinegar instead maintains the softness of the cotton without altering its properties.
Having at least three fitted sheets in rotation ensures that you always have a clean sheet without multiplying high-temperature washes, which prolongs the lifespan of the fabric and its effective certification.
The choice of an organic cotton fitted sheet for a baby relies less on the displayed brand than on the concrete verification of the GOTS certificate, the license number, and the finishes applied to the fabric. French manufacturers that combine GOTS 7.0 certification, Oeko-Tex, and local manufacturing offer the highest level of traceability available on the market.
