Pay Search Engines and Directories
Some engines and directories will only list your site if you pay. Some charge a one-time fee, others a yearly fee and others a charge per click. One-time and yearly fees are based on one page only. If you want multiple pages listed, you have to pay a fee for each page. Pay-to-Play and Pay-Per-Click

A popular pay-to-play directory is Yahoo. They used to charge a yearly fee. Now they charge an annual fee to have 1 page listed usually your home page. The first time you pay their fee, they do not guarantee you will be listed. Each site is reviewed by a human.
Pay-to-play search engines (as opposed to directories) will list your site if you pay their annual fee. They will list as many pages as you want as long as you pay a separate fee for each page. You compete with other paid pages in the same way you compete at free engines. Keywords and link popularity are prime factors in rankings.
Pay-per-click search engines charge you a fee called a bid price each time a surfer clicks on your link. The most important PPC engine is Overture/Goto. You sign up with them by submitting a list of search terms and the amount (bid) that you are willing to pay for each. The bids are ordered with the highest bids at the top.
