There are two types of hosting: virtual web hosting and non-virtual web hosting. With non-virtual hosting you do not have a registered domain name. You use the name given to you by your host. Free hosts such as GeoCities and Tripod use this method. If you want to move to a different host, your domain name changes.
With virtual hosting you lease space on a server and use your registered domain name. If you move to a different host, you take your domain name with you. If you choose virtual hosting, you can either have a virtual or dedicated server. With a virtual server you share it with other sites. With a dedicated server, only your site is on it. Both types should have security precautions installed.
You need to decide how much disk space and data transfer capabilities your site requires. Thirty web pages are about 1 MB of disk space. Figure out how much disk space you need, and then leave room for growth. Assuming an average 30K web page size, then 1000 MB of data transfer equals about 30,000 page views by surfers. Most hosts allow 1000-4000 MB of data transfer per month. Estimate your projected site traffic.
You use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to upload your web site to the host. Most HTML editors have this function already built in. You need the server name, login and password.
You can host with us. We have low cost plans starting at $24.95 a month. We set it up for you including Domain Name Servers and e-mail accounts.
