Frequently Asked Questions
What
is a Search Engine?
Search engines crawl through your
web site with a robot or spider that indexes your pages. Major search engines include Altavista,
Lycos, HotBot
and Google. Eventually (in theory), robots and
spiders automatically crawl the entire world wide web without web site owners submitting their pages.
However, to speed up the process, you can submit your domain name to each of the major engines.
Be sure to have links to all pages on your site so the robots can find them.
What is a Web Directory?
Directories only list pages manually
submitted to them by site owners. Humans decide what gets listed by visiting the site. Listings
are usually placed in the category the site owner recommends. The owner also submits a title and
description that becomes part of the listing. Directories frequently change the title and description
that was submitted. Directories include Yahoo
and LookSmart. Quality of sites found in a
directory are considered to be better than those in a search engine.
What are keywords or keyphrases?
Keywords and keyphrases are entered
by surfers at search engines and directories to find information. Your web pages need these keyphrases
in the title, description meta tag and content. Keyphrases should be two to five words long. One
keyword alone is too general.
Keyphrases in the HTML title are the most important, followed by meta tags, headings and content.
Keywords at the beginning of the page are more relevant than those later. Overuse of a keyword
or keyphrase is considered spamming. In some cases this will get you banned from a search engine.
When your site is spidered, each engine uses a different algorithm to determine rankings. These
algorithms are constanly changing so you have to keep up to date with the current engine and directory
rules.
