Keyphrases in the HTML title are the most important, followed by meta tags, headings and content. Keywords at the beginning of the page are more relevant than those later. Overuse of a keyword or keyphrase is considered spamming. In some cases this will get you banned from a search engine.

When your site is spidered, each engine uses a different algorithm to determine rankings. These algorithms are constanly changing so you have to keep up to date with the current engine and directory rules.
