You need to find out if the domain name (URL) you want is available. Go to Network Solutions or InterNIC. Enter your proposed name. It will you tell if your name is available. Keep trying until you find an available name you like. For added protection you can also register variations of your name such as plurals, with/without hyphens or .net/.org if you already have .com. Then have your hosting company point these names to your main web site.
 
You can register your domain name through your hosting company, site designer or you can register it yourself. Rates vary according to which registrar you use. You have to register every year or else you lose your name. If your hosting company or site designer registers for you, be sure it is registered in your name and not theirs. If registered in their name, then they own your domain name.
